Overeating at night is one of the biggest downfalls of people trying to lose weight. There are many reasons why people eat more at night ranging from boredom to actual hunger. One of the reasons is because when the sun goes down our levels of serotonin do as well. Serotonin is a natural, mood boosting, appetite suppressing brain chemical.
This loss of serotonin not only weakens your ability to manage your appetite, but also your body has less serotonin to convert to melatonin, a chemical secreted at night that makes us feel relaxed, satisfied, and able to sleep. A double whammy!
Here are some ways to help you fight your desires to binge at night:
Eat Turkey, turkey and other proteins like eggs, salmon, and beans increase levels of tryptophan, the amino acid that your body needs to make the serotonin that helps control your appetite.
5-HTP, a deficiency in 5-HTP can cause serotonin imbalances, which are associated not just with cravings but with insomnia, and anxiety too.Taking a 50-100mgs of 5-HTP each evening can really help, it works quickly too, within ten minutes you will feel your cravings subside.
Get more sunlight. One reason you could be having cravings at night is because you are light deprived in the day. Studies have shown that walking or doing 15 mins. of any form of exercise in the sunlight once or twice a day is a great way to stimulate serotonin production.
Drink water, a lot of times feeling hungry is actually our bodies feeling thirsty. Drinking a large glass of water every 60 to 90 minutes or whenever you feel a snack craving coming on.
Brush your teeth, weird but true. Some people said that their cravings were alleviated by brushing their teeth.
Don’t leave yourself hungry after dinner. Obviously if you are hungry after dinner you are bound to start snacking, so try to fill up good with proteins and filling foods, like fish, nuts and peanut butter.
